Interventional Cardiology

Interventional cardiology is a sub-field in cardiology that deals with non-surgical techniques with catheters. An interventional cardiologist is a doctor who has special training and qualifications in diagnosing and treating structural heart conditions and cardiovascular and congenital heart problems using catheter-based techniques. Catheterization of cardiovascular diseases' diagnostic and treatment methods has gained a lot of attention and appreciation in the last few years. Interventional cardiology has many advantages compared to open-heart surgeries, like avoiding pain and scars and a long recovery period. Hence, it stole the spotlight of open-heart surgeries in a very short time.

The catheter is a tiny flexible tube that can be guided through blood vessels to diagnose and treat congenital cardiovascular or other structural heart conditions. Interventional cardiologists utilize a catheter to place stents in clogged blood vessels to rectify the obstruction in blood flow and other devices to help the heart function properly. Successful catheter-based procedures used to correct heart conditions are angioplasty, percutaneous coronary intervention, valvuloplasty, etc.
